Making Solar Panel Installations

by Steve on September 9, 2009

As the technology for solar cells gets better with time, this form of clean, renewable energy will find more applications that take up less space and produce more electricity, to meet the energy needs of our homes, schools, and businesses. Solar panel installation is a step forward to support the same.

With the major problem of global warming on the rise, it’s becoming a necessity to use eco friendly items in our everyday life to keep our environment green and contribute in making our planet a better place to live. In today’s eco conscious world, many famous personalities like Al Gore, Bono and others promote energy conservation. You too can be a part of this elite league by doing your own little bit for the same.

The term solar panel is best used for the solar thermal collector of your homes. However, the same term may also refer to a photovoltaic unit, which is an assembly of solar cells to produce electricity. In all cases, these panels are typically flat and are available in various sizes depending on your requirements.

These solar panels can be installed on different kinds of roofs. The panels can be either flush mounted or tilted up. It is always advisable to install your solar panel while your home is being roofed to avoid future hassles. It is advisable that you do your research to ascertain the best possible location for solar panel installation so that you use them hassle free for decades to come

The installation procedure below demonstrates how to mount solar photovoltaic panels on a sloped roof. This installation also shows how to incorporate solar mounts into a new roof:

Step 1: Choose the right solar panel for yourself

Many companies use ‘Fast Jack’ solar panels in order to structurally attach solar panels to the roof. These panels are used while the roof is being constructed for the first time. Whereas, ‘Tiletrac’ mounts are used for existing roofs.

Step 2: Attaching solar panels

Align the panels on the rafter. Pre-drill the rafter before attaching the panels to avoid breaking it. You can also find rafters with stud finders on the market. Outline the solar panel on the rafter with a chalk before fitting the panels on the rafter.

Step 3: Securing the mounts

Secure the mounts on the roof by using stainless steel lag bots. Next, metal railings are placed on the mounts to hold the panels.

Step 4: Panel placements

Once that is done, it’s time to place the solar panels in groups of 4-5 panels on the railings.

Step 5: Coating the roof

After the solar panels are placed on the railings, a layer of reflective roof coating is applied on the roof.

Step 6: plugging it in

The last step is to connect the entire setup to the inverter.

With this, we come to the end our solar panel installation. Wasn’t too complicated, was it? You can consider installing solar panels in your home and make the best of solar energy and save significant amount of money by cutting down your electricity bills.
